Recognize the signs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A server that needs to be replaced is often the moment when the question arises: when to switch to Azure? Yet hardware that expires is rarely the only reason. The better question is whether your current IT environment still helps your organization to work securely, flexibly and without unnecessary delay. If the answer is increasingly no, Azure may be a logical next step.   <\/p>\n<p>Azure is not a one-size-fits-all answer to every IT issue. For some applications, processes or locations, a local server remains appropriate for the time being. But for many SMBs, the Microsoft cloud platform offers a way to reduce reliance on aging equipment, limited capacity, and manual management operations. The switch works especially well when it stems from a clear business purpose, not a desire to simply move &#8220;to the cloud.&#8221;   <\/p>\n<h2>When moving to Azure becomes a logical choice<\/h2>\n<p>The need often arises gradually. Employees notice that systems are slowing down, remote access is faltering or files are difficult to share. Meanwhile, the management sees unexpected investments, increasing security questions and little insight into the actual IT costs. Viewed separately, these seem to be minor bottlenecks. Together, they can indicate that the current environment no longer fits well with the organization.    <\/p>\n<p>An Azure environment can make capacity available faster, strengthen continuity, and make management more predictable. That doesn&#8217;t mean that every server has to go to Azure automatically. It does mean that you can assess which place makes the most sense for each application: in Azure, on-premise or in a hybrid setup. It is precisely this choice that prevents a migration from becoming a technical project without noticeable business results.   <\/p>\n<h3>Your hardware is nearing the end of its life<\/h3>\n<p>New servers, storage and network components require a substantial upfront investment. In addition, there are licenses, maintenance, power consumption, backup facilities and time for management. If your hardware needs to be replaced within one to two years, it&#8217;s a good time to seriously compare alternatives.  <\/p>\n<p>In Azure, you typically pay for the capacity and services you use. This can be beneficial if your needs change, for example due to seasonal pressure, growth or temporary projects. At the same time, this requires good cost management. A virtual server that is permanently set up too spaciously will continue to cost money unnecessarily, even in the cloud. A good design therefore links capacity to your actual usage and budget.    <\/p>\n<h3>Your organization grows, changes or operates in multiple locations<\/h3>\n<p>An additional branch, an acquisition or a growing team often makes a local IT environment more complex. New employees must be given access to applications and data, while security and performance must be maintained. When that process requires a lot of manual work, IT slows down the organization rather than supporting it.  <\/p>\n<p>Azure helps to make services centrally available and to scale up in a controlled manner. This is valuable for organizations with <a href=\"https:\/\/nexer.nl\/en\/what-is-workplace-management\/\">hybrid workplaces<\/a>, field staff or multiple locations. The benefit is not only in being able to work from home. It is about a working environment in which people have safe access to what they need, without every expansion leading to a new technical issue.   <\/p>\n<h3>Backup and recovery no longer provide certainty<\/h3>\n<p>A backup is only valuable if recovery also demonstrably works. Many organizations only discover during an outage, ransomware incident or server failure that restoring data takes too long or that certain systems have not been included at all. That risk is higher when backups are manually checked or rely on a single physical location.  <\/p>\n<p>Azure can play a role in backup, disaster recovery and geographically separate storage of data. Which design is needed depends on the impact of failure. An administration system may be unavailable for a working day, while production scheduling, telephony or a customer portal must recover within hours. By agreeing on recovery goals in advance, you make continuity measurable instead of non-committal.   <\/p>\n<h3>Security and compliance are taking more and more time<\/h3>\n<p>Security is no longer just a firewall and antivirus program. Think of identity, access rights, <a href=\"https:\/\/nexer.nl\/en\/req-elcxs6ipd80bndtaittjc-jpeg-2\/\">multi-factor authentication, updates, logging<\/a> and recovery after an incident. For organizations without their own IT team, it is difficult to manage all these components structurally, especially if systems are spread across servers, laptops and various cloud services.  <\/p>\n<p>A well-designed Azure environment provides capabilities for central identity management, monitoring, and access policies. However, technology does not take over responsibility. Poorly designed permissions remain a risk, even in the cloud. That&#8217;s why security should be part of the migration design from the start: who can access what, how is access controlled, and what happens if an account or device is compromised?   <\/p>\n<h2>First assess, then migrate<\/h2>\n<p>The biggest mistake with a cloud migration is wanting to move everything at once. Not every application is suitable for Azure and not every vendor supports a cloud variant. Some mission-critical applications perform better close to on-site machinery or specialist equipment. Other applications can run in an Azure virtual server without modification, but still provide little innovation.   <\/p>\n<p>An inventory therefore maps out more than just servers. Look at applications, dependencies, data sources, users, peak loads, licenses, links and requirements regarding privacy or retention periods. The internet connection and workplaces also count. A cloud application can run perfectly technically, but employees still experience delays if the connection in the office has insufficient capacity or redundancy.   <\/p>\n<p>In addition, discuss the company priorities. Do you want to start new employees faster, limit absenteeism, connect locations more easily or make costs more predictable? These goals determine the design. An organization that primarily wants to improve business continuity may first opt for backup and recovery in Azure. Instead, an organization with growth plans can start by modernizing business applications and identity management.    <\/p>\n<h2>Choose the migration form that suits your situation<\/h2>\n<p>In practice, there are three common routes. In a lift-and-shift, an existing server moves almost unchanged to a virtual server in Azure. This is relatively fast and can replace hardware, but also retains old equipment and management burden. It is often an intermediate step, not an end station.   <\/p>\n<p>Modernization involves adapting or replacing an application with a cloud service. This requires more preparation, but can reduce management and increase flexibility. Think of an old file server that makes way for a modern collaboration environment, or an application that uses managed database services.  <\/p>\n<p>The third route is hybrid working. Certain systems remain local, while backup, identity management, remote access or other workloads run in Azure. For many SMEs, this is the most realistic approach. You don&#8217;t have to choose between fully on-premise or fully cloud-based, but build an environment that fits your processes step by step.   <\/p>\n<h2>Keep a grip on costs, management and responsibility<\/h2>\n<p>Azure largely replaces capital investment with monthly usage costs. This provides flexibility, but only if someone actively manages consumption. <a href=\"https:\/\/nexer.nl\/en\/req-8mxrbeknfgn3xrhryji7i-jpeg-2\/\">Costs can add up<\/a> due to forgotten test environments, oversized servers, storage without retention periods or licenses that do not fit properly. Therefore, make agreements in advance about budgets, reports and who is allowed to scale up.  <\/p>\n<p>Management is also changing. Microsoft manages the physical datacenters and the underlying cloud infrastructure, but your organization remains responsible for many institutions above that tier. Depending on the services chosen, this includes user rights, data, configurations, updates and security policies. A managed IT partner can translate that responsibility into fixed processes, monitoring and points of contact, so that cloud management does not end up on the plate of a busy operations manager.   <\/p>\n<p>At Nexer, migration issues therefore do not start with a technical product, but with the way your organization works and wants to grow. This makes it possible to substantiate choices, make risks visible in advance and plan the transition without unnecessary disruption to employees and customers. <\/p>\n<h2>A switch requires a plan that takes employees with them<\/h2>\n<p>Technology is only one part of the migration. Employees need to know what is changing in their daily work, what access methods they use and where they can go with questions. A good migration plan therefore includes a test phase, clear communication, a fallback scenario and post-commissioning control. Ideally, plan critical steps outside peak times and test not only the technology, but also the processes around it.   <\/p>\n<p>So, the best time to move to Azure is before an outage, expired server warranty, or security incident forces you to do so. By taking a close look at your growth, risks and dependencies now, you create room to make policy choices.
